According to an article in SheKnows.com, there is a mother whose son has allergies and thinks it is appropriate to post this sign in her neighborhood.
“MY SON HAS SEVERE ALLERGIES AND COMES HOME EVERY YEAR DEVASTATED THAT HE CAN’T EAT ANY CANDY HE’S COLLECTED AT YOUR HOMES WHILE TRICK OR TREATING. DON’T EXCLUDE MY CHILD OR ANY OTHER CHILD FROM THE FUN.
THIS HALLOWEEN, PRACTICE RESPONSIBLE PARENTING AND DO NOT DISTRIBUTE CANDY CONTAINING NUTS OF ANY KIND, GLUTEN OR DIARY.
BE MINDFUL OF EVERYONE’S CHILD – HERE ARE SOME TASTY AND ALLERGY-CONSCIENCE SUGGESTIONS
- Carrot Sticks (fun to eat, healthy and easy on the teeth)
- Necco Wafers
- Brach’s Lemon Drops
- Raisins (But stay away from Rasinettes!!!!)”
First of all, the fact that this woman’s son has allergies and comes home “devastated that he can’t eat any candy” is HER PROBLEM! I’m sorry that that HER SON can’t eat the typical candy that most children can. Perhaps she should try to turn it into a character building experience rather than chastise other parents with kids who don’t have allergies. I am pretty certain that, should her neighbors chose to honor her nonsensical request, there will be many, many more “DEVASTATED CHILDREN” who are upset because they have nothing but carrot sticks, Smarties, Necco wafers, Lifesavers, Lemon Drops, and Raisins to eat! Why doesn’t she practice “Responsible Human Behavior”, and not be so narcissistic. The world doesn’t revolve around YOU and YOUR SON Ma’am.
Second of all, what gives her the right to judge other parents? “Practice Responsible Parenting” she writes. Who is she? Why doesn’t she take responsibility for her child, and let other people take responsibility for their children. Stop DEMANDING accommodations be made for you, and stop judging others for not capitulating to you.
In my opinion, all she had to do was change her wording. All she had to do was make people aware of her sons needs, and politely suggest that perhaps parents could offer options. But to make demands, I’m sorry, she loses all my respect. But hey, I’m just a cop.
