The term “War on Christmas” has now become offensive and obnoxious to some people. Alright, perhaps the word “war” is a little strong. Fair enough. But what would you call it? For people to deny that there is a strong movement to secularize America, and remove any acknowledgement of religion or religious values is just very naive. Take for example this post I read from on the wall of Facebook friend of mine:
So yesterday, my daughter and the rest of her high school dance company were warming up to “All I Want For Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey.
Someone walked over to the club adviser, said something to her, and the kids were then told they couldn’t practice to that song because it says “Christmas.”
This is just one of a plethora of examples. Would anyone who proclaims that those of us who perceive that our holidays, our traditions, and our customs are under attack, care to define what this should be called, if not war? Or explain why children are being told that they cannot sing a song that mentions the word “Christmas”? Would someone be so bold as to accept the challenge, and give a rational, reasonable and sane explanation as to why we should entertain the notion that the word “Christmas” should be deemed “offensive” to someone?
Why is it that people don’t put all the energy that they normally put into catering to someone who is “offended” by the word “Christmas”, instead devote that energy into explaining that it is not offensive? Why can’t they simply explain that all it does is acknowledge the accomplishments of a great man.
Whether or not you believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, the savior of the world, or simply a wise prophet, really is irrelevant. The fact remains, very few people in history have influenced as many people as Jesus did and continues to do today. His teachings are that of peace, love, and compassion. How can anyone deny this? Why, when our country has a history of honoring great people, like Martin Luther King Jr for example, with national recognition, do people claim that such recognition offends them?
Whether or not you believe there is a “War on Christmas” doesn’t change the fact that there are people who are trying to remove it from our national conscience. Rather than ridiculing and chastising those of us who are resisting this movement, rather than catering to narcissistic, selfish people who cry “I’m Offended”, why not simply say “Jesus was a great man, and if there were more people like him in this world, the world would be a better place. He deserves our respect and recognition”.
But hey, I’m just a cop.
