I had the pleasure of seeing Risen, the new movie that opened today, and it was a pleasure indeed: I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

It tells the story of Christ’s resurrection from the perspective of a fictional Roman Military Tribune named Clavius. Clavius is charged with investigating the disappearance of Jesus’ body after the crucifixion. What I liked so much about the story, is it delved into one of the points I always try to convey when discussing my faith with other people: why did people choose to follow Jesus?

Something that has always struck me personally as very compelling was the fact that the original Christians, the Apostles specifically, had nothing to gain, and everything to loose by following Jesus and preaching his word. One could easily understand why a person would enter the Church once it was established, as it often meant power, prestige, and authority. Many of the Apostles, however, started preaching at great personal risk, and many of them were eventually martyred for that faith. The Apostles whose professions were known, were all responsible members of their respective communities, and yet they gave up everything to follow Jesus, and paid the ultimate price for their faith.

In the United States, it is relatively easy to be a Christian. I am inspired by the immense faith of the Apostles, the sacrifices they, and many other early Christians made, which many times included their lives. This movie galvanized that inspiration. I’m happy to have seen it, and I am delighted to be able to recommend it.
